A trip abroad can be really exciting. It can be a little bit daunting too. If you are planning to be traveling abroad, here are 5 things you should know.
#1 Sign your passport and make sure to fill in the emergency information.
Many times customs doesn’t force the issue with the emergency contact information, but it’s a good idea to just fill it out and then know if something happens, authorities will be able to quickly contact your family.
#2 Make sure that you carefully read your overseas medical insurance policy.
Ask questions, look for things like medical evacuation, emergency expenses, and if it doesn’t cover these key things consider buying additional insurance that does. Make sure you understand what you have for coverage so that you aren’t left hanging if something happens.
#3 There are precautions you can take to help avoid being targeted for a crime.
Never wear expensive clothing or jewelry. Don’t carry large amounts of cash with you. Don’t leave your baggage unattended in a public area, and never let a stranger pack your bag.
#4 Take the time to become familiar with local laws and conditions.
Laws are often very different abroad and what might be a minor offense or not an offense at all at home could land you in jail abroad. There are many websites that provide valuable information about expectations and laws in various countries.
Should an emergency arise, you should always contact your embassy and consulate abroad, which are usually available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. They are there to help citizens from their own country so make sure that you use this service if needed.
Traveling abroad can be an AMAZING experience and offer you so many great memories – So, go enjoy what the world has to offer, just be prepared.
Remember to look for the magic that is all around you.
